Chapter Fifteen

“I think Doirean suspects,” Cassian said as he and Broccan huddled together.

Broccan nodded. “She has been watchin’ closely.”

“How will you convince her to go to a graveyard or inside a church or abbey grounds when she knows that weakens her spells?”

“She has other weaknesses, too.” Broccan cringed.

“Sarding?” Cassian sounded equally repulsed. “How can you resist her appeal now?”

“I have some protection from my lineage,” Broccan said.

“And me?” Cassian dared to ask.

“You’re a strong man. Plus, we know what chaos she can cause in her obsessiveness.”

“She might be helpful in protecting us if we run into Mercian outlaws, Viking raiders or even other knights or guards who don’t want men from Wessex in Mercia. She wouldn’t let anyone hurt you.”

“I hope we won’t need her. We have a note from King Thaddeus stating our business here.” Broccan patted his pocket.

“I doubt they’d let us live long enough to read a note and mightn’t even be able to read.” Cassian clenched and unclenched his fists.

“Perhaps not, but I don’t want to be indebted to her,” Broccan said.

“What do you suppose is taking her so long? She’s been in the woods for some time.”

“She might be killin’ an animal. Spillin’ blood apparently eases her lust. By God, I regret ever meeting her.”

“Are you two speaking of me?” Doirean came from the forest, her garments spattered with blood.

“Who else would I regret meeting?” Broccan knew that would infuriate her.

He missed Rhianwyn so much his heart hurt. He longed to return to her and their passionate love, for he gravely missed that, too. He had always been a man with frequent base needs.

It was probably nearly a fortnight’s journey to the Mercian king’s castle, even if they encountered no trouble. They didn’t know how long it would take to be granted audience and Broccan still had to find a way to make sure Doirean couldn’t return to harm Rhianwyn before he went back home.

“I thought perhaps you’d come to your senses and realized your wee wife wasn’t a suitable match for you. Maybe you’ll let your friend go back and be her man. I ken he’d be agreeable.”

“I just want to move on. I should’ve known you’d hold us up.” Broccan glared at her.

“You should be thankful that in my dissatisfaction, I havena killed anyone.” Doirean stared at Cassian.

“If you kill my friend, I will kill you,” Broccan said.

“You call him a friend when he’s bedded two women you love? You’ve an odd measure of friendship.”

“Keep quiet. I’ve no patience for your drivel.”

“Och! You’re a little edgy, Broccan. Are you missing sarding? I ken that always made you a wee bit irritable. I suppose it does most men. I will gladly appease you.” She eyed him closer. Broccan wondered if this is how women felt when men looked at them with unwelcome carnal intentions.

“Besides you and me spending time together, what caused your relationship with Broccan to end?” Cassian asked. “He’d never have followed through being dared to visit that brothel if his love for you was true.
